BACKGROUND OF TANTRA

DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO TANTRA: LEFT & RIGHT

Tantra is sometimes divided into right and left hand. The so called "right hand tantra"contains a series of physical and mental techniques that have very positive effects over health and well being, control of energies, harmonization of emotions, discipline and focalization of the mind. It also uses sacred geometry (yantra) and sacred words (mantra) which are tools for entering into resonance with the forces of the macrocosm.

In the "left hand" tantric practice the sexual re-absorption allows for the conversion and elevation of the huge sexual potential, producing rapid and beneficial transformation of the human being. This transformation can be achieved either by being sexually abstinent in conjunction with hatha yoga techniques or by being sexually 'continent' (not discharging the sexual energy, but retaining it), and over time, producing a gradual elevation consciousness until it reaches the state of supreme ecstasy or bliss. Tantra is life lived with intensity and in a superior way.

In Left-Hand Tantra sex is not practised for the sake of sex itself, as indulgence or entertainment, but as an instrument for going beyond sex, for reaching health, balance, improved couple relationships, self-control, supernormal capacities, and eventually superior states of consciousness.

There are paths which are placed at the "borderline" between the Paths of the Left-Hand, and Right-Hand, or that join and use harmoniously methods belonging to both these ways. One example can be found in certain schools of Hatha Yoga; which means discipline of the "Union of the Sun and the Moon", or otherwise said of the (+) and (-), of the Masculine and Feminine. Therefore, genuine Hatha Yoga is a kind of Tantra in which the union of the Male and Female aspects occurs within the being of the practitioner, through specific methods, leading to a condition of inner balance, harmony, and power.

It is known that Hatha Yoga is a typical Tantric instrument for training. Even so researchers still have difficulties in deciding if Hatha Yoga in itself belongs to the Right-Hand current (since physical sex is not necessarily involved) or to the Left-Hand one (being that it is so physical, and brings about a kind of physical "inner sex").

But, for real practitioners of Tantra all these distinctions have little importance, since the real interest is usually concerned with the practical, effective results of the spiritual discipline/sexual practice, and not with theories.

RED TANTRA & WHITE TANTRA

From the spiritual perspective, it is possible to distinguish two main directions of use of the sexual energy: the evolutionary one, and the "magical" one.

From the spiritual standpoint, it is possible to distinguish two main directions of use of the sexual energy: the evolutionary one or "red Tantra", and the magical one called "white Tantra".

In "white Tantra" the energy is used exclusively for beneficial, superior, spiritual purposes, such as healing, purification, transformation, etc. While "red Tantra" is dedicated entirely to the obtaining of personal pleasure and satisfaction, in a relatively self centered manner, where sexual expression has no spiritual horizon. This direction of "red" is often found amongst Western practitioners of Tantra.

The "white" path involves a revolutionary re-orientation in sex and is most easily done by a couple through embracing their sexuality with the intention of transforming it into a spiritual force. This gives their love-relationship a new dimension - a tangent to eternity where deep peace and love is experienced. This requires a spiritual commitment, a willingness from both partners to give up their personal pleasures, which often create tension, strife and karma, and instead to accomplish something rare and exceptional.
